Short list, and deliberately so. If you meet these you can start today.
A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a backup. Night Train is a small set of Bash scripts that dump MySQL and PostgreSQL databases and application files every night, encrypt them, ship them to any S3-compatible bucket, prune old copies on a retention schedule — and, once a week, restore the latest backup into a scratch database and check that it worked.
Failures send an alert to email, Slack or a webhook. Everything runs from cron or a systemd timer and is written to be read: each script is under two hundred lines and commented throughout.

The weekly restore check found that one of our older dumps had been silently truncated. Readable scripts, no dependencies, very happy.
Platform engineer, keeps the deploy lines running
Mateo has run infrastructure for an e-commerce platform through four Black Fridays and a data-centre migration, which left him with firm opinions about rollbacks. He writes the DevOps recipes and backup scripts, and tests each one on a fresh server and a fresh cloud account before release. If a recipe has no undo, he does not consider it done.
